Our feet are amazingly complex structures, and their functionality is even more intricate. Yet we take our feet for granted and assume mobility as given. However, even the slightest damage or harm to these assets can severely hamper your ability to perform everyday tasks like standing, walking, going from one place to another, even resting.
It won’t come as a surprise that majority of people suffer from at least one foot condition, ranging from bunions, hammertoes, Achilles tendon, heel or arch pain, fractures or sprains, to arthritis, diabetic neuropathy and more.
At Joseph Stuto, DPM, we advise our patients to adopt a few measures and make them a part of their lifestyle so that they can enjoy their feet to the fullest. Some of the important ones include:
- Watch your weight. The heavier you get, the more burdened your feet become, exposing them to problems like flat feet, ankle inflammation, etc.
- Wash your feet daily and keep them dry at all times to avoid fungal and bacterial infections.
- Wear comfortable shoes that provide ample support to your heel, arch and the balls of your toes. The right size of footwear is equally critical: too tight or too loose will damage your feet either way.
- Avoid high heels for longer durations as they tend to squeeze your toes and put excessive stress on the balls of the feet.
- Do not use other people’s shoes or socks as that exposes you to the risk of catching multiple infections.
- Rest in between intense physical activities; elevate your feet and allow idle time for them to restore any tissue or muscle damage.
- Cut your toenails straight to prevent toenail infection and ingrown toenails.
