This April, give your feet the care they deserve for bearing the brunt of all our weight and carrying us around all the time. At Joseph Stuto, DPM, we are celebrating National Foot Health Awareness Month in honor of our feet.
Here are a few important facts about our feet that you probably were not aware of:
- One foot comprises 10 tendons, 19 muscles, 26 bones, 33 joints, and 107 ligaments.
- On average, a person takes 10,000 steps in one day!
- Our feet have natural shock absorbing capabilities.
- While walking, each foot carries approximately 1.5 times our body weight, which increases to 5 times when we are running.
- Problems with our feet are usually signals of major issues in other parts of the body like diabetes, edema, kidney and liver issues, etc.
- Despite their immense significance, only 2 out of 10 people pay attention to their foot health on a regular basis.
According to our board-certified podiatrist, Dr. Joseph Stuto, a large number of people suffering from diabetes will not even know that they have any foot condition and are more likely to end up with foot ulcers. Due to poor blood circulation, lack of sensation may occur which means foot ulcers may go unnoticed till their condition worsens severely. If treatment is not sought, they could become infected or, even worse, may require amputation.
Therefore, it is advised to:
- Examine your feet thoroughly on a daily basis.
- Wear proper and comfortable shoes that provide stability, and do not harm your feet with excessive friction or constriction.
- Exercise on a regular basis to improve circulation and enjoy an overall healthy body.
- Massage and compression are beneficial for blood circulation and healing of damaged tissue.
